NewCampus helps you fit learning into your life through daily discussion-led classes, hosted by virtual instructors, delivered in inspiring offline classrooms. Our team is global and remote first. We’re part nerdy, part creative but we all share a passion for changing the way people learn and grow. Keep life in beta.
This week, let’s meet Isan De Jesus, the Chief Culture Officer at NewCampus.
Tell us a little about yourself
I admire and try my best to practice kindness, empathy and vulnerability. My purpose in life is to make people’s lives better in any way that I can. And on a less formal note, I love both sober and inebriated moments :)
What do you do at NewCampus?
I support the team and make sure that they are comfortable and happy :)
What does your typical day at work look like?
I usually jump onto Slack earliest at around 11am-ish (clearly not a morning person!). My day is usually filled with corresponding with the team on operational things that they need my help with in sorting and processing, creating and implementing new plans and processes with our COO Fei, and then a few days a week I do 1-1 catchups with at least 3 team members, as well as some a few catchups with people who are interested in working with us. :)
What is your current focus at work?
Right now it's hiring interns who are sharp, witty and also passionate about what we believe in at NewCampus
Three words that describe you?
Sassy, silly, and sweet. Lol!
Why did you join NewCampus? What excites you about what you do?
I joined NewCampus because I admired their goal to help people out, which is the value I strongly align with.
More than excitement, I feel contentment in my role of supporting and nurturing the team so that they can go out and do their best to solve the problems and meet the goals that NewCampus wants to address and achieve.
How do you incorporate lifelong learning into your schedule?
I am currently in grad school (graduating this year, hopefully!), so that’s one channel that I’m currently learning from.
Another one is that I make sure to read articles on empathy, education, technology and business every week. And lastly, I make sure to LISTEN to people who are from different cultures, backgrounds, and fields from me, as I believe that listening to other people’s stories is how one can learn to be a more empathetic person.
What/who inspires you?
The people that I love — my partner, my sisters, my parents, my dog, my best friends, and my NewCampus family. ❤
Share a book/podcast/article (with relevant data and links) that inspired you and tell us why it impacted you
This article by Darius Foroux on how usefulness, not happiness, is what gives us purpose in our lives. In this article, Darius quotes Ralph Waldo Emerson: ‘The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”
What do you do outside of work for fun?
Grab drinks with my loved ones. Try out different types of food. Go to the beach and swim all day! Help out those in need in any way possible (whether it’s giving the homeless some snacks, helping sick animals, or organizing an event to give impoverished kids educational supplies that they need).
What’s the best piece of advice you can give to anyone?
Try being as vulnerable as possible with the ones you love. It pays off, big time.
Your favourite quote/motto
“Your acts of kindness are iridescent wings of divine love, which linger and continue to uplift others long after your sharing.” — Rumi
